The silly ‘Literal Penny Lane’ video that is being circulated at the moment (it’s a voice over on the original video – just YouTube it if you are interested) brings a few things to mind…
1: Penny Lane has an awesome trumpet arrangement, and it’s played almost inhumanly well. The rest of the arrangement is pretty spectacular as well and has an abundance of detail.
2: It’s a very good song. The lyrics have a fucked up surreal touch to them.
3: The video isn’t necessarily good but it’s really cool. It’s almost incomprehensible that Paul McCartney was once cool, but here is clear evidence. The restaurant-on-the-marsh scene is especially wicked, and as if straight out of a Buñuel film.
