“Gorgeous pop baroque”
Times on "Drowning Men"
“A sublime, beautiful, impassioned stunner”
NME album review - 8/10
“Pitched between Arcade Fire’s funereal art-rock and Beirut’s pastoral folk, but lacking the pomposity of the former and the pretentiousness of the latter, London-based collective Fanfarlo’s debut is a carefully orchestrated treat. The instrumentation is kitchen-sink; accordion, clarinet, glockenspiel, mandolin, melodica, saw, sax, trumpet and violin, plus guitars, bass and drums. Simon Balthazar’s we’ll-crafted songs, though, and the band’s knack of arranging them sensitively, ensures the mix never sounds cluttered or overblown. There are big pop moments here too: string-swept album highlight ‘The Walls Are Coming Down’, new single ‘Drowning Men’ and ‘Fire Escape’. If you’re waiting patiently for that new Grizzly Bear LP, take a dip.”

“What a delightful discovery: We’d never heard of the band before stopping by the church, but were excited by the idea that we’d be able to sit down for awhile, and by the time their set was over we were standing in the pews and forking over a tenner in exchange for a copy of their debut album, Reservoir.” (Nick Marino)
Clash
“In the scale of its aspirations and the intricacy of its production, ‘Reservoir’ is a million miles away from the stereotypical self-released debut. It’s overwhelming, humbling and hauntingly beautiful” – Clash feature

Frequently Asked Questions
And Their Answers (So You Don’t Have To Ask Them Again!)
- How Did You Meet?
Like blood cells, we coagulated around a foreign object in the form of a Swedish recording project, introduced in the body of the London scene by Simon Balthazar a few years ago.
- Where Did You Get Your Name?
Simon was reading a lot of French symbolists at the time and happened upon a novella by Baudelaire called La Fanfarlo – the name sort of stuck. We like how it is sort of language-ambiguous and sounds like ‘fanfare’.
- What Are Your Influences?
Folk music, marching bands and motown. We also have a real sweet spot for odd post punk and pop like Talking Heads, Television and Orange Juice, not to mention American 90s indie and folk like Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control and early Modest Mouse.
We are also pretty big on books, philosophy and vegetarian cooking.
- For Someone Who Has Never Heard Your Music, How Would You Describe Your Sound?
All of the above.
- Where Are You From?
We all live in London, but Simon is from Sweden and Cathy comes from Belgium via Italy.
- What Is Music?
Music is a series of sounds (tones) and rhythms arranged in a certain way so that it brings a particular experience to someone. Specifically the person with the red scarf sitting on a stool in the corner, slumped over a large cream dessert. Correctly executed, it will make him convulse in a startled and rhythmical fashion, sending him across the floor in a vague figure eight. Music can also be the complete opposite.
